José Curto received an honourable mention for the Joel Gregory prize offered by the Canadian Association of African Studies (for the best book on African studies written by a Canadian or African who has studied in Canada).The book is Enslaving Spirits: The Portuguese-Brazilian Alcohol Trade at Luanda and its Hinterland, c. 1550-1830 published by Brill. The Committee praised José Curto’s monograph as “a beautifully written excursion into the role of imported alcohol in the slave trade, challenging the conventional wisdom of the historiography of the early modern and modern Atlantic World. A compelling narrative and an incisive analysis.”
