Department of History congratulates Marcel Martel and the organizing committee (Jennifer Stephen and Will Stos from York, plus Dimitry Anastakis of Trent U. and Matthew Hayday, U. of Guelph) for putting together such a stimulating conference last Thursday, Friday and Saturday on “Transformation: State, Nation and Citizenship in a New Environment”, a conference that explored the future of political history. It was sponsored by The Avie Bennett Historica-Dominion Institute Chair in Canadian History, a chair which, as you all know, Marcel holds. It brought together francophone and anglophone faculty members and graduate students from across Canada, who gave a series of stimulating papers, which engaged the audience in lively debate. All in all, it was a stellar success.
The Department is also grateful for the gracious words of welcome provided by the Provost, Patrick Monahan, and Associate Dean (Research) Barbara Crow before Gérard Bouchard’s splendid keynote address on “Social Structure and Social Change: Why and How Culture Matters. Bringing Myth Back onto the Agenda”.
