Dr Karolyn Smardz Frost, our part-time colleague in History and research associate at the Harriet Tubman Institute, has been appointed as the Canadian Bicentennial Fellow in Canadian Studies in the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University for the 2012-2013 academic year. The fellowship comes with a courtesy appointment in the History Department at Yale. She is the third York historian to hold this fellowship, as far as I am aware, after Ramsay Cook and Chris Armstrong held it in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
Karolyn has done marvellous work here at York both in teaching History courses and in working on a whole host of initiatives in the Tubman Institute over a number of years. The fellowship provides a great opportunity to enhance Canadian Studies at Yale and to bring Karolyn’s research on the underground railroad and the history of blacks in Ontario and Canada to the centre of attention of faculty and students alike at Yale.
