Dear historians,
It gives me great pleasure to announce that our History colleagues Stephen Brooke and Bill Wicken have been shortlisted for the two top prizes offered annually by the Canadian Historical Association / Société historique du Canada (CHA/SHC).
Stephen Brooke is one of three historians shortlisted for the 2013 Wallace K. Ferguson Prize for his book, Sexual Politics: Sexuality, Family Planning and the British Left from the 1880s to the Present Day (Oxford University Press, 2011). The Wallace K. Ferguson Prize is awarded annually to the best book in history other than Canadian.
Bill Wicken is one of the five shortlisted nominees for the 2013 Sir John A. Macdonald Prize for The Colonization of Mi’kmaw Memory and History, 1794-1928: The King v. Gabriel Sylliboy (University of Toronto Press, 2012). This prize is awarded for the book that has made the most significant contribution to the understanding of the Canadian past.
This is a wonderful affirmation by our colleagues in the discipline of the outstanding quality of Stephen’s and Bill’s books, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that each will win the respective awards, to be presented at the CHA Annual General Meeting at the University of Victoria on June 2.
You will recall that this is the second year running that a member of the LA&PS History Department has been shortlisted for the Sir John A. Macdonald Prize, with Bettina Bradbury being nominated last year for Wife to Widow.
Many congratulations, Stephen and Bill, on behalf of the entire Department of History.
