Congratulations to our colleague, Boyd Cothran, whose short article, “The Valentine’s Day Treaty,” was published today by The New York Times, as part of its Disunion series on the Civil War.
Boyd’s article explores the Valentine’s Day settlement negotiated in 1864 between California lawyer Elijah Steele and the Klamanth-Basin people. The agreement was based on compromise and represented an alternative vision of U.S.-Native relations, but it was rejected by official Washington, with tragic results.
