Dear faculty members and graduate students,
I’m very pleased to announce that Mr Pheroze Unwalla has accepted the Dean’s offer of a one-year Sessional appointment in the History of the Middle East commencing July 1, 2014.
Pheroze Unwalla is completing his PhD in History at the School of Oriental and African Studies (London, UK) with a thesis titled “Narrating Gallipoli: A History of Turkish National Remembrance, 1923-2013” which relays the first comprehensive history of Turkish national remembrance of the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli – an Ottoman First World War victory that serves as a tenuous point of national origin for multiple nations. He has been a Teaching Assistant and Sessional Lecturer at Simon Fraser University, and is currently a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of History at the School of Oriental and African Studies where he is offering courses ranging from “Oral History in Palestine and South Africa” to “Cities of Paradise and Empire.” Pheroze has an article forthcoming in a special themed section on “Nationalism and Revolution” which he is guest-editing for the journal Nations & Nationalism.
