Dear colleagues and graduate students,
More good news! This morning I received a copy of a letter from the
President, Dr Mamdouh Shoukri, confirming his enthusiastic agreement
with the unanimous recommendations of the Department’s Adjudicating
Committee and the Senate Review Committee that our colleague, Professor
Kathryn McPherson, be promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July
1, 2016. This is marvellous news and a richly deserved recognition of
Kate’s superb all-round contribution to the Department, Faculty and
wider University.
In his letter the President praises Professor McPherson for her
“leading-edge” research on the history of women, health and work in
Canada and the important new directions that she has provided for work
on Aboriginal history and the history of sport. He singles out her
“exemplary” teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, not least
her engaging and interactive teaching style and her important
supervision and mentoring of graduate students. Finally, he rightly
commends her outstanding service contributions at all levels of the
university, not least her current work as Associate Dean Faculty Affairs
in LA&PS.
I’d like to take the chance to thank last year’s File Preparation
Committee, Adjudicating Committee and all the staff who did so much to
make this a compelling file for a deserving colleague.
Most of all, many congratulations, Kate, on behalf of the entire
Department on your much deserved promotion.
All best wishes, Jonathan
