History Department has recently heard that two of the candidates it supported for SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships have won fellowships in this year’s competition. These fellowships are highly competitive and their success is a clear mark of their scholarly promise. It will be stimulating to have them join the community of historians at York for two years from 2011 to 2013.
Kathryn Magee Labelle, who is completing her PhD at the Ohio State University, where she has been supported by a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and numerous other fellowships and grants, will come to York to work on her project “Voices of Resistance: Wendat Indian Removal Throughout An Era of Multiple Relocations, 1701-1867” under the supervision of our colleague Carolyn Podruchny. Kathryn has already published four articles on “Women and War in Nadouek Society”, “Huron Childrearing Attitudes, Eurocentricity, and the Importance of Indigenous Worldview”, “Agency, Activism and Education of Alberta’s Native Women’s Clubs, 1942-1970” and “The Loss of Leaders and Life In Wendake, 1632-1640”. Her publications currently in press include an article written jointly with Carolyn on Jesuit “Jean de Brébeuf’s Representation of Wendats in Seventeenth-Century New France”.
Dr Michael Snowdon, who defended his PhD thesis at McMaster University in 2010, will be coming to York to work with the chair on “The Roman Empire in the Greek World: Conceptualising, Negotiating, and Accommodating Roman Power in the Hellenistic World, c. 200 BCE – 69 CE”. He has held SSHRC-Canada Graduate Scholarships from 2004 to 2008 to support his Master’s and doctoral research and he won a prestigious fellowship to study at the Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik of the German Archaeological Institute in Munich in 2008. He has published one article on Memory and Freedom at the city of Metropolis in Ionia (Asia Minor) and has a second in press. He won the prize for the best paper by a graduate student at last year’s Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of Canada.
The Department looks forward to welcoming them both when they take up their postdoctoral fellowships later this year.
