Dear colleagues,
I am very pleased to announce that a new postdoctoral fellow will be spending the 2016-17 academic year with us thanks to funding provided by our colleague Adrian Shubert’s Killam Fellowship. Dr Matthew Kerry will be joining the Department officially as of July 1, but effectively from August. In addition to his own research on contemporary Spanish history, he will be teaching AP/HIST 4360 6.0, Europe between the Wars, 1918-1939.

Dr Kerry has provided a brief summary of his research interests:
I completed a PhD in Modern History at the University of Sheffield (2015) and an MA in Historia Contemporánea at the Universidad de Zaragoza (2011). I am a social and cultural historian of modern Spain driven by an interest in politics and with broad research interests, which include radicalism and revolutionary politics, social movements, violence, protest, emotion, anticlericalism, religion, community and spatiality. Fundamentally, my research is underpinned by particular historical questions: what does politics mean, and how is it experienced and embedded in everyday life? How do the mechanics of social relationships and power function? How and why do individuals form groups and communities? How are such identities forged and policed? I am currently writing a monograph which develops and extends my PhD dissertation on political practice, radicalism and community building in the coalfields of the northern Spanish region of Asturias during the Second Republic (1931-1936).
