Joan Judge Elected to the Royal Society of Canada

Dear colleagues: 

Truly it is an honour to serve as Chair in such a wonderful department. After reporting on important publications and innovative research earlier it now gives me more pleasure to report that our colleague Joan Judge has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada.  This is a great honour for all of us and is additional proof, if any more were needed, of the first class nature of our department.

Here is the citation:

Joan Judge has reshaped understanding of modern Chinese history through methodologically innovative studies in Chinese print culture, periodical studies, and women’s history. Prominent among her publications are three books: Print and Politics: ‘Shibao’ and the Culture of Reform in Late Qing China; The Precious  Raft of History: The Past, the West, and the Woman Question in China; and Republican Lens: Gender, Visuality, and Experience in the Early Chinese Periodical Press.

Joan Judge a repensé la compréhension de l’histoire chinoise moderne à travers des recherches méthodologiques et novatrices sur la culture chinoise de l’imprimé, des études périodiques et l’histoire des femmes. Trois de ses livres sortentprincipalement du lot:  Print and Politics: ‘Shibao’ and the Culture of Reform in Late Qing ChinaThe Precious Raft of  History: The Past, the West, and the Woman Question in China; et Republican Lens: Gender, Visuality, and Experience in the Early Chinese Periodical Press.
