History & Another Subject
Students may pursue an Honours Double Major with approved programs in most of the Faculties at York University: LA&PS, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, Health, or Science and Engineering.
A Double Major in History and a non-linked program normally requires 42 credits in History and 42 credits in the other Major. The non-linked programs include: Anthropology, Business and Society, Children’s Studies, Classical Studies, Classics, East Asian Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Hellenic Studies, Law and Society, Mass Communication, Political Science, Sociology, and Visual Arts.
A Double Major in History and a linked program normally requires 36 credits in History and 36 credits in the linked program. Currently the linked programs are African Studies, European Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Social and Political Thought, and South Asian Studies.
Courses that meet the other Major’s requirements cannot also be used to meet those of the History Major.
Graduation Requirements
Students must:
- Successfully complete (pass) at least 120 credits that meet the degree and program requirements of the Faculty of LA&PS with a cumulative grade point average of at least 5.00;
- Complete 42 credits in History (or 36 credits, if your other major is one of the linked interdisciplinary programs listed above)
- Complete 42 credits in your other Major (or 36 credits, if your other major is a linked program)
- Complete 21 credits of General Education requirements, as described below;
- Complete at least 36 credits at the 3000- or 4000-level, including at least 18 credits at the 4000-level (of which 12 must be in History).
- Meet York’s residency requirement: at least 21 credits in History (50% of credits toward your major) and at least 30 credits overall must be taken at York University.
General Education
Students take a minimum of 21 general education credits as follows:
- 6 credits in natural science (NATS)
- 9.00 credit course in either the humanities or social science categories from the approved list of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies general education courses
- 6.00 credit course on the other side of the humanities and social science category divide from the approved list of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies general education courses
Approved General Education Courses
Credits in History
42 credits (or 36 credits, if your other major is African Studies, European Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Social and Political Thought, or South Asian Studies), including:
6 credits at the 1000-level (Must be taken in the LA&PS History Department)
- First-year courses taken at Glendon or other universities do NOT satisfy this requirement. (The Department usually counts these as 2000-level courses.)
- No more than one AP/HIST1000-level course (6 credits) will count towards the HIST
- Upper-year students must obtain permission from the Director of Undergraduate Studies to enrol in an AP/HIST1000-level course.
- Courses at the 1000-level do not fulfill the departmental requirement that at least one course in the major must deal with history outside Canada and the U.S.A.
- Exemptions to these requirements are only granted at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Exemptions may be granted if the student has taken a minimum of 18 credits in History courses, in which the student has earned a minimum B+ History grade point average. Students granted such an exemption must take a substitute 6-credit History course at the 3000 level or above.
At least 36 additional credits in History (if your other major is a non-linked program)
OR
At least 24 additional credits in History (if your other major is a linked program)
- No more than 12 credits in History at the 2000-level will count towards the Major
- At least 6 credits in History above the 1000-level must deal with history outside Canada or USA
- At least 12 credits in History must be at the 3000-level if you are in a non-linked program; at least 6 credits if you are in a linked program
- At least 12 credits in History must be at the 4000-level, including at least one seminar
- A course may only count toward one Major (no double-counting)
Information on 4000-level History courses
- The AP/History Department offers two types of 4000-level courses: seminars and colloquia. Seminars (HIST 4XXX) normally enrol about 18 students and have a substantial research component. Colloquia (HIST 40XX) normally enrol 30 students.
- History Honours Majors must take at least one 4000-level seminar
- 4000-level History seminars are NOT offered during the summer session.
- 4000-level History courses taken at the Glendon Campus will count as seminars if they have planned enrolments of fewer than 20 students.
- History Majors who have successfully completed at least 84 credits may use the online enrolment system to enrol in 4000-level courses for which they have the prerequisite(s). Students unable to enrol for any reason should contact the course director and the Director of Undergraduate Studies for permission.
- Exceptionally strong students may enrol in Graduate History courses at the 5000-level with permission of the course director. Such a course will be entered as AP/HIST 4991, Advanced Seminar in History, on undergraduate transcripts and will count as a 4000-level seminar for departmental degree requirement purposes. On request, the department will attest, on letterhead, that History 4991 is a graduate-level course. For further information and permission to enrol, see the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
- Honours Essay (AP/HIST 4000 6.0): History Majors of exceptional ability (defined as a B+ or higher average in History) may apply for permission to do an Honours Essay under the supervision of a History department faculty member.
