Fragments of Memory, an exciting and challenging new exhibit of storytelling and recovered memory of the African diasporas, will officially launch on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in 305 Founders College, Keele Campus.
In the exhibit, Brazilian artist Pablo Parra represents the biographies and testimonies of five individuals of the African diaspora and transatlantic slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. The striking portraits express the emotion that the artist felt upon reading the individuals’ accounts.
The opening night will include a panel discussion featuring the project’s director, Bruno R. Véras; York University Professor Paul E. Lovejoy, co-editor of the UNESCO General History of Africa; and artist Pablo Parra. Their conversation will engage the audience with methodologies bridging research and creative representation.
This exhibit is a public history initiative, part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization’s celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Slave Route Project: Resistance, Liberty, Heritage.
