For Hafasa Issa, transitioning to the Canadian workforce as a newcomer from Afghanistan came with significant challenges. Despite her strong academic background and experience as a Human Rights Officer, she struggled to gain recognition for her international qualifications in Canada.

“As a newcomer from Afghanistan, I faced a lot of challenges when trying to find work in Canada. Despite having a solid academic background and experience, I struggled because my international qualifications didn’t seem to resonate with local employers,” shares Hafasa.

The IEP Bridging Program provided her with the necessary tools and support to successfully transition into the Canadian labor market, ultimately helping her secure a role that matched her expertise.

“The IEP Bridging Program was a game-changer for me—it provided the guidance, support, and tools I needed to understand the Canadian job market and present my skills in a way that made sense here. It gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that I once thought were out of reach,” she shares.

Hafasa joined the IEP Certificate Program with the goal of understanding the Canadian job market and securing a position aligned with her skills. The program helped her refine her job search strategy, resume, and interview techniques—leading to a breakthrough in her career.

“One of my main goals in joining the IEP Bridging Program was to understand the Canadian employment landscape and connect with professionals in my field. The program helped me refine my job search strategy, update my resume, and practice interview skills,” she explains.

Today, Hafasa is working as a Program Coordinator and Project Manager at triOS College, a role that allows her to apply her skills while growing professionally in Canada.

“As a result, I was able to secure a position that aligns with my qualifications and career goals. It also boosted my confidence in presenting my experience in a way that resonated with Canadian employers. The program really made a difference in helping me move forward in my career,” says Hafasa.

Building a Strong Network of Support

One of the most valuable aspects of the Certificate Program for Hafasa was the opportunity to build meaningful connections with both fellow IEP participants and professionals in her field.

She highlights: “The Certificate Program didn’t just build my skills - it helped me make meaningful connections with my IEP alumni, transforming my experience in Canada. As a newcomer, I often felt isolated, but the program connected me with others on a similar journey and professionals offering valuable support. These relationships have been a lifeline, providing guidance and encouragement. Today, I continue to be inspired and motivated by the IEP alumni community I found.”

Understanding Canada’s professional environment and workplace expectations was a crucial part of Hafasa Issa’s success. The IEP Certificate Program equipped her with the knowledge she needed to confidently enter the job market.

“It provided me with valuable insights into Canadian systems and workplace culture, which gave me the confidence to pursue my professional goals and navigate the job market more effectively,” says Hafasa.

I’ve always wanted to include public administration in my career, and through the IEP program, I was able to achieve that,” she stated.

“My advice to other newcomers looking for employment in Canada would be to be patient with yourself and take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow. The Canadian job market can feel overwhelming, but programs like the IEP Bridging Program provide the support and resources you need to succeed,” she says.

She highlights the importance of using available resources, staying resilient, and taking proactive steps toward career success:

“Don’t hesitate to ask for help, whether it's with networking, building your resume, or understanding workplace culture. Stay open to learning, stay persistent, and believe in the value of your skills and experience—you have so much to offer,” encourages Issa.
