IT- Systems Analysis

Salesforce Consultant, Business Systems Analyst
CIBC

Jane Suleiman brought extensive experience as a Systems Administrator when she arrived in Canada. However, like many internationally educated professionals, she found herself facing the all-too-familiar challenge of not having her credentials recognized and lacking local work experience.

“I joined the IEP program to gain Canadian work experience and build a professional network,” said Jane.

Some of the common challenges she faced included “difficulty getting my international credentials recognized in Canada, lack of Canadian work experience and connections, limited knowledge of the Canadian job market and industry standards, language barriers, and cultural adjustments” and lastly, “ difficulty navigating the job search process and interview expectations in Canada,” she explained.

Setting the Foundation
Determined to adapt, Jane immersed herself in York University’s IEP Program, focusing on bridging her international background with Canadian industry standards.

“It enhanced my communication and presentation skills, I built a strong network of professionals in my field, I gained recognition for my international experience and credentials.” Ultimately, “I secured a job at CIBC, a renowned Canadian bank,” Jane reflects.

Expanding Her Network
“The Certificate Program in IEP at York University provided a valuable platform to connect with like-minded professionals, industry experts, and alumni,” Jane explains. “Through networking events, group projects, and class discussions, I expanded my professional network and formed meaningful relationships. I built relationships with classmates from diverse backgrounds, sharing knowledge and supporting each other's career goals. It opened doors to new opportunities, including my current role at CIBC, and I'm grateful for the experience.”

Bridging the Knowledge Gap
“The Certificate Program in IEP at York University equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the Canadian labor market. Monica Brennan sent me a link to Salesforce during my program. I connected with the resource although the slots were full and I couldn’t get into the program, I got the exposure and I researched about Salesforce and that was it. The program helped me bridge the gap between my international experience and the Canadian job market. I became more confident in my abilities, and the skills I gained have been invaluable in my current role at CIBC. The program truly prepared me for success in the Canadian labor market.”

“To another newcomer looking for employment in Canada, I would advise:

  • Network and build connections—Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with people in your field on LinkedIn.
  • Consider upgrading your skills—Invest in courses or certifications that align with Canadian industry standards and requirements.

A Turning Point
Reflecting on her experience, Jane says, “The Certificate Program in IEP at York University was a turning point in my Canadian journey. It not only bridged the gap between my international experience and the Canadian job market but also empowered me with the skills, confidence, and network to succeed. I’m proud to say that the program opened doors to new opportunities, and I’m now thriving in my role at CIBC.
