Tetiana Kovalenko arrived in Canada determined to restart her career but quickly encountered challenges in navigating the job market.

“I joined the IEP Bridging Program because I wanted to restart my career in Canada and needed help to understand the job market,” she explains.

Like many newcomers, she faced obstacles such as the lack of Canadian work experience, difficulty tailoring her resume for local employers, and uncertainty in preparing for interviews.

“The IEP program helped me overcome these challenges. It gave me advice, support, and confidence to show my skills and find my first job in Canada,” Tetiana shares.

Bridging the Gap

The Foundation Program played a crucial role in Tetiana’s journey to prepare for the Canadian workplace.

“The Foundation Program helped me learn a lot about life in Canada. It taught me about Canadian workplace culture, how to communicate professionally, and how to adapt to the local job market,” she says.

In addition to providing essential career tools, the program introduced her to valuable newcomer resources, helping her navigate networking, resume building, and interview preparation.

“The program gave me a better understanding of the expectations of employers in Canada and how to meet them,” Tetiana adds.

Improving Communication Skills and Building Confidence

Tetiana acknowledges that one of the most impactful aspects of the Foundation Program was its focus on communication skills, which were crucial in helping her feel confident in professional settings.

“It taught me how to write resumes, cover letters, and professional emails. I also practised speaking in group discussions and presentations, which helped me feel more confident,” she explains.

She credits the program’s instructors for their unwavering support: “I am very thankful to the instructors for their support and encouragement, which made me believe in my ability to succeed in a new country.”

Expanding Her Professional Network

Through the Foundation Program, Tetiana was able to connect with professionals in her industry, particularly Certified Professional Accountants (CPAs) who shared valuable insights into the field.

“The program helped me meet professionals who are already CPAs and are successfully working in the accounting field. Their advice and guidance inspired me and gave me a clear understanding of how to work toward my CPA designation,” she explains.

She also found a community of like-minded peers, which provided motivation and encouragement.

“I am very grateful for their support and encouragement, which motivates me to stay focused on my career goals.”

Preparing for the Canadian Labour Market

Tetiana found the program’s practical approach to career preparation particularly beneficial.

“I learned how to tailor my resume and cover letter to Canadian standards, prepare for interviews, and present my skills confidently,” she shares.

She now feels well-equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the job market successfully.

“I am very thankful for the practical knowledge and tools the program provided, as they helped me feel more prepared and confident to enter the job market.”

Achieving Career Milestones

One of Tetiana’s primary goals was to secure her first job in Canada—an achievement she credits to the program’s support.

“I gained confidence in my abilities, improved my communication skills, and built a professional network,” she says.

She also gained clarity on her long-term goal of earning a CPA designation and now has a defined roadmap to achieving it.

“These achievements have been life-changing and have given me the motivation to keep moving forward.”

Advice to Newcomers

Tetiana encourages other newcomers to take advantage of programs like the IEP Foundation Bridging Program.

“This program is very important because it helps newcomers become part of a group of people who have clear goals and are confidently working toward them,” she says.

She believes the Foundation Program provides the structure, support, and motivation needed to succeed.

“Being surrounded by motivated people inspires you to stay focused and move toward your own goals. With the right support and effort, you can achieve success in your career.”
