DARE Project: Voice-based Pedagogical Strategies in Intercultural Reading Contexts
Program(s) of Study: English
Project Supervisor: Agnes Whitfield

I hope this research can help students understand our differences and the world better while learning about literature from across the globe. I also hope they can develop an appreciation for international work and understand the unique context of the stories and characters, because each character's story reflects a person's life who shares this world together.

Project Description:

This project starts from the premise that reading literary works that engage with intercultural issues can offer students productive opportunities to acquire knowledge of other cultures and learn civic values of intercultural dialogue and tolerance. More specifically, this project explores how the concept of voice (who is speaking and from where) could be developed pedagogically to help students learn how to separate out different subject positions (inter-textual voices) and social discourses (extra-textual voices) in intercultural literary texts and how to identify (intra-textual or extra-textual) mediating voices helpful for building common discussion ground. The more granular goals of the project are: 1) to articulate a working conceptualization of voice suitable for pedagogical applications in teaching intercultural texts; and 2) to develop concrete applications in the form of pedagogical material and tools. The project will create new knowledge about pedagogical strategies for university intercultural reading contexts, such as World Literature courses in which students read works from other cultures in translation, or second language classes in which students study texts from another culture in the original. It will also offer new insights into how such courses could contribute more effectively to developing students’ intercultural knowledge and dialogue skills, and how teacher training for intercultural teaching contexts could be enhanced.

The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members. Find out more about DARE.
