DARE Project: World War One and European Companies in Western Africa
Program(s) of Study: History and Political Science
Project Supervisor: Deborah Neill
I hope that it will spur on additional focus on the burgeoning field of colonial history. The literature review we have performed demonstrated just how much is still left in this field to uncover and discuss.
Project Description:
We studied the impact of the First World War on companies operating in West Africa. This has involved the transcribing of various documents, close examination of primary source newspapers, and a literature review on the topic. Additionally the research has branched out with a more specific focus on the Prize Court system which seized and condemned many shipping liners. The research has also expanded to elsewhere in the Colonial world, specifically Egypt. Egypt is a complicated figure in the First World War given it's split loyalties between the British and Ottoman Empires. It is our hope that Egypt's position can be further explored through studying Egypt's role in the Prize Court system as it pertains to Suez Canal crossings. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
