DARE Project: International Student Programs as Pathways to Permanent Residency?: Examining International Students' Experiences of Two-Step Immigration to Canada
Program(s) of Study: Sociology
Project Supervisor: Ethel Tungohan
My project entailed one-on-one interviews with international students attending colleges and universities across the GTA to better understand the two-step immigration process. I looked for repeated patterns that signified different reasons why students chose Canadian post-secondary institutions as their destination, how they arrived, who was involved (e.g., family, recruiters, immigration consultants etc.) and their plans. As a sociology student, I have always been curious to gain insight into communities, individuals and societies. Through this project, I embraced what I love the most: meeting new people, discovering what shaped their decisions and agency and finding ways to help them in the future.
The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members. Find out more about DARE.
