DARE Project: Digital Place-Making on Migrant TikTok: A Review
Program(s) of Study: Development Studies
Project Supervisor: Yvonne Su , Tegan Hadisi
I hope this research can help show how digital media has power to break old stereotypes or strengthen them specifically in the context of migration/refugees or asylum seeking.
Project Description:
TikTok's global presence has transformed digital content creation, empowering marginalized voices, particularly young migrants from the Global South to share their migration experiences. Migrants use TikTok to challenge prevailing media portrayals and construct counter narratives that challenge prominent Global North media stereotypes of ‘invading’ migrants from the Global South.
This research project examines how digital news media impacts place making on TikTok for Albanian migrants. Objective of this research project is to carry out a systematic review of the academic literature, gray literature, media stories and policy documents around Migrant TikTok. The project will also search, document and categorize Migrant TikTok to find content creators and content.
