DARE Project: Examining students’ application of postsecondary consent and sexual assault education – Phase II
Program(s) of Study: Honours Criminology
Project Supervisor: Tuulia Law
It is my sincere hope that our research identifies the blatant gaps in existing literature, educational materials, and policy at large to facilitate a safer environment for young people attending post-secondary; to establish a framework that emphasizes effective proactive measures instead of relying on solely reactive policies.
Project Description:
The project, “Examining students’ application of postsecondary consent and sexual assault education – Phase II,” explores young people's understandings of and grievances with postsecondary consent and sexual assault education to foster a more appropriate and comprehensive response that is predicated on students' diverse needs. This project builds upon interview data from current and recent students, while utilizing other forms of primary and secondary data, to identify the areas in which current educational programming must be amended to equitably address the needs of students, thereby informing practical policy recommendations. My responsibilities, more specifically, have involved researching scholarly literature and synthesizing my findings in a literature review that outlines the emerging trends in postsecondary consent and sexual assault education. Additionally, I have conducted an environmental scan across Canadian post-secondary institutions. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
