The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) at York University has once again helped York make significant strides in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 report.
The QS World University Rankings, published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), evaluate scholarship across more than 1,700 institutions, segmented into five broad subject areas:
- arts and humanities,
- engineering and technology,
- life sciences and medicine,
- natural sciences, and
- social sciences and management.
Within those five broad subject areas, there are 55 individual subjects that QS evaluates in terms of employability, research and discovery and global engagement. In concert with other Faculties, LA&PS scholars were active in individual subjects that achieved rankings within the top 150 globally and among the top five in Canada:
- Philosophy (tied third in Canada)
- Anthropology (tied fourth in Canada)
- History (fourth in Canada)
- Sociology (tied fourth in Canada)
- Social policy & administration (fourth in Canada)
- Accounting & finance (tied fourth in Canada)
The Faculty also saw high rankings for linguistics, business and management studies, economics and econometrics, and politics and international studies, placing them within the top 10 in Canada.

The QS World University Rankings reflect LA&PS’s ongoing commitment to its 2021-2026 Academic Plan, which emphasizes student learning, innovation, social justice, and global opportunities. The Faculty continues to aim to provide high-quality scholarship and educational programs that equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and agility to succeed in an ever-evolving world.
