Awards, Scholarships & Bursaries

Awards are not just a source of extra funds – scholarships, awards and bursaries are a great way to enhance your resume and university transcript, demonstrating your hard work and dedication to your studies.

The Department of Philosophy offers awards based on academic standing, financial need, or in recognition of your hard work. For financial awards, you must fill out your Student Financial Profile, follow the three easy steps below.


Derek Guzman-Hau Memorial Prize

The Derek Guzman-Hau Memorial Prize was established in 1992 to commemorate the death of Derek S. Hau, a philosophy major, who died in an automobile accident in May 1992. It is awarded to a philosophy essay in a 3rd or 4th year course that most displays excellence and insight.


Doreen Silver Prize in Philosophy

This award is in honour of the academic achievements of Doreen Silver, PhD. It is awarded to the student with the highest standing in a 3000- or 4000-level philosophy course dealing with any or all of the following areas of philosophy: the British Empiricists, Logic and Scientific Method, Metaphysics and Ethics. Preference will be given to students in courses dealing with the British Empiricists.
