Although research on the experiences of LGBTQ employees has made significant progress in the past two decades, most studies have focused predominantly on the negative consequences LGBTQ employees encounter in the face of workplace heterosexism. The role of change agents that LGBTQ employees may play in terms of advocating equal treatment has been largely overlooked. There have been calls for studies that focus on the strengths that LGBTQ employees could bring to organizations rather than the challenges they face due to workplace heterosexism (Byington et al., 2020). Further, very few studies related to LGBTQ employees were conducted outside of the USA (Colella et al., 2017). This knowledge gap limits the understanding of LGBTQ employees’ workplace behavior in terms of disrupting workplace heterosexism and advocating equal treatment for sexual minorities and overlooks the possible bottom-up process of creating a diverse and inclusive work environment.
