The 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada: Improving Livelihood and Social Wellbeing is the first study to examine 2SLGBTQ+ poverty in the country. Awarded a Partnership Grant of $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), this project will study both the extent and effects of poverty on the 2SLGBTQ+ communities across Canada between 2022 – 2028. It will produce an evidence-based action plan that can assist governmental agencies, non-profits, and private organizations to address poverty therein.
The research team consists of:
- 29 multidisciplinary academics at universities throughout Canada and the US
- 25 non-profit community-based 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion and/or poverty reduction partner organizations
In addition to host York University, institutional partners include:
- Dalhousie University
- Saint Mary’s University
- University of Toronto
This Project is informed by a Community Advisory Board made up of 2SLGBTQ+ people with experiences of poverty representing each province and territory across the country.
We are driven by a community-based participatory research approach that is structured by four Teams:
- Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) Team
- Mixed Methods Research Team
- Qualitative Research Team
- Quantitative Research Team

Our Projects
Knowledge Mobilization Team
The Knowledge Mobilization Team works on effective mobilizing of knowledge and evidence related to the prevalence, risk, and experiences of poverty in 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and impacts on their social wellbeing, health, and socioeconomic empowerment.
Mixed Methods Research Team
The Mixed Methods Research Team (MM-RT) will be responsible for integrating the findings from the qualitative and quantitative components of this project to tell the “big picture” story of 2SLGBTQ+ poverty in Canada.
Qualitative Research Team
The Qualitative Research Team will complete individual interviews and focus groups across each province and territory to generate insight into pathways to poverty and pathways out of poverty for 2SLGBTQ+ people.
Quantitative Research Team
The Quantitative Research Team will launch a national-level survey to collect data directly from 2SGBTQ+ people across Canada in 2023-24.
