December is fast approaching, and many of you are preparing for end-of-term assignments and final exams. In this edition of The Scoop, find resources to support you as you work towards achieving your academic goals! Participate in some of the excellent support programs and services offered by the university to help you get through the term.

Supports and Resources to Help You Thrive Academically
A wide range of resources and services are offered to LA&PS students to help you succeed academically and to balance your life and coursework.

- Writing Centre
Need help in writing that final paper? Get the support you need to produce effective academic and professional writing by visiting the Writing Centre, located in the Ross building. You can join a Drop-In Session or book a One-to-One Appointment with a writing instructor. - Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)
Peer-Assisted Study Sessions, or PASS, are a very effective way to help succeed in challenging courses. In these free study sessions, you’ll work as a team with other students to break down complex ideas, develop smarter (and faster!) study methods, practice problem-solving, develop learning strategies and prepare for exams. - Student Numeracy Assistance Centre at Keele (SNACK)
SNACK provides support to students in LA&PS courses that involve math, stats, and Excel. Whether you are enrolled in finance, accounting, marketing, or economics classes, you’ve come to the right place for student-friendly numeracy assistance. - Learning Skills Services
Get the guidance you need to achieve your academic goals with workshops and services that address learning skills such as time management, writing effectively, ways to study and preparing for exams. - Academic Advising with your Student Success & Academic Advisor
Student Success & Academic Advisors are dedicated to your academic success. They are available to provide the information and guidance you need to help achieve your academic goals. Just select your department to find your advisor. - Peer Mentoring
Through peer mentoring, you can connect with a high-achieving upper-year student who can help you adjust to university life and find support and resources.

Lions, Are You Ready to Travel the World?
The LA&PS Summer Study Abroad Program is excited to offer you eight faculty-led study abroad courses in Summer 2024. Earn up to six York University credits while studying and living in a far away destination for up to one month with your friends and classmates!
Course applications are now open! The application deadline for all courses is January 12, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST. Check out the available courses and destinations.

Is Your Study Permit About to Expire?
As an international student, you are required to have a valid permit to study in Canada. If your permit expires on or close to your graduation date, you should apply to renew your permit 3-4 months in advance.
York International has licensed International Student Advisors, Immigration Specialists and other resources to help you navigate the process.

Spend 3 - 4 Months Abroad with Global Internships
Interested in gaining international experience and a skill set that will build your resume? Try a Global Internship at one of our host organizations offering placements in a variety of sectors including research, industry, NGOs and so much more! The current recruitment cycle is for Summer 2024 and the deadline to apply to York International is December 1st, 2023.

Earn a Credit While Working on a Social Impact Project
Connect with students across York to spend a year (or just one term) working on a real-world, social impact project through the Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom (C4). Work on challenges from non-profit organizations, cities, businesses, start-ups and more. You’ll come out of the course with new interdisciplinary professional skills and a multifaceted approach to problem-solving, as well as a course credit. Check out this video about C4.

Writer-in-Residence Program Presents: I AM SIRAT + A Conversation with Deepa Mehta & Shyam Selvadurai
The Faculty of LA&PS and the Department of English invite you to an evening with Writer-in-Residence Shyam Selvadurai and internationally revered filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
Shyam Selvadurai will host Mehta for a screening and discussion of her latest collaboration, the documentary film I Am Sirat. The film follows Sirat Taneja, a transwoman in India, as she navigates living a dual life.
Consent & Intimacy Training for Theatre
Whether you are participating in theatre or not, this training will help you navigate conversations around consent in various workplace environments.
Join Corey Tazmania, a certified intimacy director with Intimacy Directors International. You will learn about the 5 Pillars (Context, Consent, Communication, Choreography, Closure) and how to apply these concepts in a theatrical environment.
This training is mandatory for all participants at Vanier College Productions (VCP).

Vanier College Productions Presents: Ajax
Thought to be one of Sophocles’ earliest works, Ajax is a Greek tragedy that depicts the fate of the warrior Ajax after the events of the Iliad. Tickets are PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN-AFFORD (suggested $5) and can be purchased online or at the door (cash only).

Job Searching After Graduation as an International Student
Job searching can be a part-time job on its own. During this session, you will learn and practice how to find opportunities through various job posting engines, such as Indeed and Canada Job Bank. You will learn how to analyze the job descriptions as well as how to apply for positions.
Before attending the Job Searching After Graduation Session, please ensure that you have completed the Job Searching Strategies module of the Career Readiness Internship Preparation Course.

Gain New Leadership Skills with LA&PS
LA&PS Colleges is happy to introduce “Leading with LA&PS,” a program that consists of various workshops designed for students to develop and gain new leadership skills.
Our next workshop, “Conflict Resolution,” will discuss strategies leaders can use to minimize conflict. Conflict and disagreements are inevitable so it’s important to have some strategies to ease the tension and ultimately resolve the conflict. You won’t want to miss this workshop.

International Students are Invited to Join Us at the ESL Café!
In collaboration with the ESL Open Learning Centre, we will be offering an ESL Cafe for all international students in LA&PS!
The session will provide key tips on academic English speaking and provide opportunities for practice through a combination of interactive group discussions. A resource sheet with practical tips will be provided to students for later reference.
Note: An International Student Success Ambassador will stand in the rotunda of Vari Hall and will walk you to Ross Building South 327 for the ESL Café.

Vanier College Productions (VCP), in collaboration with Founders College presents “LA&PS Got Talent”, a BRAND NEW talent show! The event is an opportunity for the LA&PS community to come together, mingle, and enjoy a showcase of our talented students.
Sign-up to showcase your talents for a chance to WIN a York University Bookstore gift card! Performances should be approximately 3 minutes long and consist of ANYTHING you consider to be your talent (e.g. singing, juggling, stand-up comedy, poetry, impressions and more). LA&PS Community Hub for Snacks, Games and More!
Join us at the Community Hub every week for some free snacks, board games, puzzles, colouring, a lending library and other destressers. The room is staffed with Peer Mentors to support you with whatever questions you have or resources you need.
Don’t forget to drop by on November 30 for some holiday-themed crafts with gingerbread cookie decorating, hot chocolate and holiday movies!

LA&PS Internship Program Drop-in Session
