Sept 18, 2024 Issue

Hello Lions!

LA&PS is bustling, and we hope you are thriving in your first few weeks on campus! If you need help with your classes, we’ve featured several programs below designed to help you succeed.

This edition of The Scoop features upcoming events, including public lectures and ways to honour our Indigenous community in support of National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30

September 30 is a day that honours the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

You are encouraged to wear orange on September 30 for Orange Shirt Day, which is intended to raise awareness of the impacts of residential schools, promoting the concept of “Every Child Matters.”  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

Join the York community in honouring the day by attending one of the film screenings and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Panel Discussion.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI): The Good, The Bad & The Performative

The School of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies’ annual lecture provides thought provoking conversations on important topics. This year’s roundtable features Ginella Massa, Desmond Cole, Nadiya Ali and Somar Abuaziza, and explores various fields such as higher education, broadcasting, news organizations and politics, and the ways in which racialized and other marginalized people with progressive politics are initially welcomed in spaces of power, becoming symbols – or tokens – of progress in achieving “diversity and inclusion,” only to then be gaslighted, vilified or face reprisals for espousing their views.
