Members of the Department of Sociology at York University express our deep concern over the ongoing unrest in Iran following the tragic death of Mahsa Amini. We stand in solidarity with the women of Iran and with the civilian protestors who are bravely rising against oppression and discrimination.
The unfolding news of violent crackdowns on civilians causing more deaths and injuries, including on Iranian university campuses, is extremely distressing for our community. Our hearts go out to all those affected by these traumatic events, and those who have connections to the region and are worried about their families and loved ones.
In support of “Women, Life, Freedom,” the slogan raised by Iranian protestors, the Department of Sociology at York University firmly asserts its commitment to the fundamental principles of free speech and human rights – that all people should be treated equally regardless of their race, gender, nationality, language, religion, or any other status. We value diversity, inclusivity, social justice, and equity.
We encourage all who are concerned to reach out, to acknowledge and reduce distress, and to bolster strength by supporting one another with compassion.
