Awards, Scholarships & Bursaries

Current Student Awards

This award recognizes high performance and service among sociology students. Students must present high academic promise and initiative in both course related and extracurricular activities at York and in wider communities. The award is presented to one student in first, second and third year. Candidates must be nominated by a sociology faculty member. Deadline: June 15 (contact the department for current information).

This award recognizes first and second year sociology majors who have been SUSA members in good standing. The recipients are expected to demonstrate an engagement with sociology both inside and outside of the classroom. Deadline: June 15 (contact SUSA for current information).

Established in the memory of Christopher Beattie, former Department Chair of Atkinson Sociology, devoted teacher, and a promising and productive scholar who died at the age of 36. It will be awarded to a LA&PS student registered in a third or fourth year sociology course for the best sociology essay. Excellence and originality are the chief criteria. Deadline: June 15 (contact the department for current information).

The So Pui Ching Award in Sociology is given to a sociology undergrad who has earned a minimum of 30 credits and is now in second or third year. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 7.5, must demonstrate involvement in the York community and financial need. Students with permanent disabilities can submit a paper application form available from a registered campus service provider. Contact the department for further information.

Graduating Student Awards

The Department of Sociology Undergraduate Award for Excellence is awarded to a fourth year sociology undergraduate who best demonstrates our commitment to publicly engaged sociology. This student will demonstrate academic excellence and community engagement. Candidates must be nominated by a sociology faculty member. Students must have a minimum GPA of B+ and graduating in the spring or fall. Deadline: June 15 (contact the department for current information).

This award was established in honour of Professors Emeritus Bernard Blishen and Anthony Richmond. Professor Blishen was known for the Blishen Scale and named to the Order of Canada in 2011. Professor Richmond, one of the founders of the department, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1980. Both highly esteemed sociologists, they passed away in 2017. The award is presented to the honours sociology graduand selected as outstanding based on academic merit. There is no application; recipients will be contacted by the department.

An award for the most distinguished graduating Honours student based on the highest GPA in sociology courses. There is no application; recipients will be contacted by the department.
