Honours Seminar: Law And Sexuality
This Law and Society seminar examines the ambiguous & shifting role law plays with respect to sexuality. What is of interest to this course are those sites where legal issues, specifically harm, consent, and human rights, butt up against philosophical and social issues, namely, personal liberty, desire, moral panic, and “othering.” Topic areas include obscenity, risk of harm, age of consent, provocation defense, sexual assault, sexually transmitted disease, asylum-seeking, criminalization of HIV transmission, & reproductive rights. Our approach will be interdisciplinary, that is to say, we will draw on and across a variety of disciplines in order to pose questions about the place of law on the bodies and in the expression & the practices of sexual subjects.
