The Anthropology of the City

As a massive assemblage of humans and non-humans, the city poses an interesting set of theoretical and methodological challenges for anthropology. Through a critical reading of ethnographic case studies from Brazil, China, India, and Canada, the course introduces the students to the theoretical concepts and methodological tools used by anthropologists and covers topics such as urban segregation, informality, poverty, immigration, planning, renewal.
