BSW Admission | York Internal Applicant

Delivery mode: on campus (online or hybrid learning not available)
Location: Keele
Intake: Fall (September)

The School of Social Work seeks to prepare students to be critical practitioners who seek social transformation. This stream accepts applicants currently enrolled at York University who wish to change their major to social work. The application includes two steps: a program change request to be submitted between January 1 and March 1 and the completion of a supplementary application by the published deadline. Transfer credits are assessed during the internal transfer process based on a review of the applicant’s most recent course enrolment records and any prior studies.

Internal applicants will typically have enough credits to enter the BSW at either the second or third-year level, taking the first-year introductory social work course (if applicable) along with level 2000 core social work courses and any remaining general education courses they may need once they join the program. In the subsequent years, students will focus on level 3000 and 4000 core social work courses as well as electives inside and outside the major.

In the final year, all BSW students will complete a field practicum or placement in a social service setting. The practicum is arranged by the School to provide important hands-on experience in a variety of social/human services community settings. It is intended to support the integration of theory and practice, preparing students to work as professional social workers. As such, the field practicum becomes the culminating experience of each student's education at the School. The Field Education Office works closely with hundreds of community partners in order to secure the best possible placement opportunities for students each academic year.

Eligibility & Requirements

  • Current enrolment at York University.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of B (6.0 or 70%) for Direct Entry and B+ (7.0 or 75%) for Post-Degree (if you already hold a degree from York or another institution).
  • A supplementary application with the following:
    • A Social Justice Statement. See the Supplementary Application Form (PDF) as a reference only for the requirements of the Social Justice Statement.
    • A resume – a minimum of two years of related social work experience, paid and/or voluntary, is preferred.
    • Three references. Reference contact information is to be submitted on the third page of the online Supplementary Application Form for Internal Applicants. This will automatically send an electronic form to your referee requesting a reference letter on your behalf. Your referee should complete the request and send it electronically to York Admissions.

Please note that the School of Social Work has very limited positions for transfer students. As an alternative, we encourage you to consider applying once you have completed your current degree via the 105 Post-Degree Entry stream.
