Ishvita Sharma
My name is Ishvita, and I’m a fourth-year Bachelor of Public Administration student in the management stream.
Since joining the School of Public Policy and Administration, my academic experience has been inspiring, providing me with opportunities that have shaped both my personal and professional growth. The interdisciplinary focus of the BPA is one of its biggest strengths, which has allowed me to develop a well-rounded skill set in a number of course areas, such as policy, law, and human resources management, while encouraging me to think critically and apply classroom concepts to real-world contexts.
This year, I’ve had the privilege of taking experiential education courses offered by the SPPA that have allowed me to make connections from theory to practice. Through the Practicum in Public Administration – PPAS 4995, I work with Ontario’s Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) where I support team members with in-year and multi-year planning initiatives to ensure Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) decisions align with government priorities. One of the most interesting aspects has been learning about Ontario’s fiscal cycle and seeing firsthand the intricate briefing process in developing recommendations that are submitted as confidential advice to cabinet.
Another standout course has been Applied Public Policy Analysis – PPAS 4200, where I’ve been learning about various policy frameworks and tools in a collaborative setting. As a part of a team project, I’ve undertaken research for the purpose of creating evidence-based recommendations aimed at informing the advocacy efforts of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) on a pressing social policy issue. Under the guidance of our course Instructor, this experience has taught me the components of what makes a well-structured analysis and the nuances of crafting effective policy solutions.
Outside of academics, my involvement with the Public Policy & Administration Student Association has been one of the most memorable parts of my university experience. Having joined the PPASA in my first year after transferring into the BPA, I’ve been grateful for the chance to give back to the community that welcomed me so warmly. Starting as the Director of Internal Affairs and now serving as Vice President, I’ve been fortunate to help organize engaging initiatives that provide opportunities for professional development, policy-focused discussions, and meaningful connections with SPPA faculty, alumni, and public sector leaders. It’s been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with my team to create a space where students can network and explore their ambitions. For anyone looking to get involved, the PPASA is a fantastic opportunity to engage with the school, develop transferable skills, and make long-lasting friendships.
Embracing change has been defining part of my academic journey, and I could not have found a more supportive transition than when I joined the SPPA. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had so far, and I’m excited to see where the future takes me. To anyone considering the BPA program, I can confidently say it’s a time you’ll always remember—one that will challenge you, inspire you, and help you grow in ways you didn’t think possible.
