Job Description:

The Academic Support Peer Mentor serves all students affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) by facilitating academic support services to LA&PS students. Under the direction of the Student Success Coordinator and the Manager of Student Success and Access Programs, the Academic Support Peer Mentor delivers academic support to students in LA&PS by providing one on one support to students to facilitate understanding of course concepts, along with the development and delivery of workshops (e.g. time management), that help foster effective study strategies for students. 

The Academic Support Peer Mentor will also support the Student Success & Access team in facilitating academic skill development training for LA&PS students and student-staff. This peer mentor will help students structure and prioritize their study routine and facilitate learning skills through workshop delivery. They are trained to facilitate student learning by modelling good study habits and encouraging students to learn from each other. 

 

As part of your experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in: 

  • Creating meaningful goals and objectives 
  • Recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences 
  • Identifying their competencies and skills  
  • Articulating their skills and experiences with confidence 

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback.  

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in LA&PS Student Success Training 
  • Attend Learning Skills Services training and workshops as required by the Student Success Coordinators 
  • Assist with delivering fall LA&PS Student Success Training 
  • Develop and deliver a schedule of academic support workshops offered to the general LA&PS student population 
  • Ensure the dissemination and promotion of academic workshops through collaboration with the Peer Mentor Community of Practice, College Peer Mentor teams, PASS Leader Community of Practice, and LA&PS Communications 
  • Conduct ongoing academic support training for LA&PS Student Success and Retention student-staff teams 
  • Ensure the accurate attendance tracking and collection of session feedback for all academic support workshops and trainings delivered 
  • Sit as a member of the LA&PS Peer Mentor Community of Practice and attend all necessary meetings as required by the Student Success Coordinators 
  • Meet with Student Success Coordinators regularly 
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Student Success Team 

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current and continuing undergraduate student at York University 
  • Previous relevant experience with peer tutoring, mentoring or other peer support at a post-secondary will be preferred 
  • Previous experience with student leadership is preferred

  • Demonstrates skills in helping other students 
  • Excellent communication skills; especially in public speaking and presentation proficiency 
  • Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and take on initiative 
  • Demonstrates organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team 
  • Knowledge and/or sensitivity to issues affecting domestic and international students and their transition to Canada or to York University 
  • Knowledge of York’s resources and services for students and campus life 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy 
  • Demonstrates reliability punctuality, and enthusiasm to support students with their academic skills 
  • Students who are a good fit for this role are approachable, knowledgeable, and open to learn about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent adaptability and organizational skills
