The George Hopton Award was established by the former Atkinson Students’ Association (ASA) and friends, to honour Professor Hopton, retired Professor of Humanities at York University, ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church, and former Master of Atkinson. Professor Hopton was an advocate for redressing systemic imbalances and social injustices. This award is intended to recognize and encourage students with special needs or circumstances. Awarded annually to a Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies student who is pursuing his/her first degree, completed at least 18 Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies credits (six credits of which should be a general education course) with a minimum overall GPA of 7.0 and majoring in any of the following fields: Humanities, Religious Studies, Social Science, Sociology, Social Work, Woman’s Studies. Preference will be given to a student who: demonstrates financial need; is the first in their family to attend a university; is a single parent; disabled or indigenous.
