VCP stages ‘My Favorite Year’

Get ready for lights, cameras and action as Vanier College Productions presents My Favorite Year from March 5 to 15 at the Fred Thury Studio Theatre at the Keele Campus.

Based on the motion picture of the same name, My Favorite Year takes place in 1954 and follows the story of Benjy Stone, a sketch writer for the live television variety show King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade. Alan Swann, a one-time movie idol whose career has since declined due to his addiction to alcohol and women, is signed on for a guest appearance. The task of keeping Swann sober and celibate until airtime falls to Benjy, who soon finds himself involved in a sequence of shenanigans unlike any he ever experienced before.

Originally produced by Lincoln Center Theater with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and the book by Joseph Dougherty, My Favorite Year is a hilarious musical with tender moments that guarantee a fun time.

“The show is very different than some of the other shows that have been done at VCP,” said Justin Büyüközer, the director of the musical. A former VCP alumnus, Büyüközer shares his excitement about using his fight choreography background in the show.

“We have an extremely strong, cast, crew and creative team and I’m excited to watch everything come together,” adds Shannon Murtagh, assistant director and choreographer.

Vanier College Productions’ My Favorite Year is directed by Büyüközer, assistant directed and choreographed by  Murtagh, music directed by Athena So, choreographed by Sara Masciotra-Milsten and stage managed by Riley-Lynn Hickey.

It runs with 8 p.m. shows every Tuesday to Saturday and 2 p.m. matinees every Saturday and Sunday. An accessible performance will be taking place on March 14 at 2 p.m
