Caroline Duncan

Caroline Duncan

Caroline is a PhD candidate in civil engineering focusing on optimizing drinking water in the Arctic using participatory approaches to system dynamics modelling. As part of the Lassonde School of Engineering, her research seeks to understand the complex factors that affect the quality and accessibility of drinking water in the Arctic using an interdisciplinary approach. Through her research, Caroline will work closely with the Municipality of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, collaborating with community members, government, and NGO stakeholders involved with drinking water from source to tap. Through this collaboration, a model will be developed to test treatment and policy interventions to optimize drinking water safety.

Yeuhyun (Kevin) Kim

As a PhD Chemistry Candidate at York University, Kevin studied his Master’s degree in Atmospheric Chemistry at York University and Hons B.Sc. in Physics from University of Toronto. His main research interest lies in catalytic remediation of wastewater to achieve green and sustainable resource recovery. His current work focuses on developing effective photocatalytic nanomaterials for wastewater processing, with a focus on removal of organic contaminants.

Yiqian Wu

Yiqian Wu

Meet Yiqian Wu, a dedicated doctoral student at York University. Holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, China, and a Master's degree from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. In past research endeavors, Yiqian focused on using photo-electrocatalysis (PEC) for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from wastewater treatment plant effluents. Currently, Yiqian's research is centered around the application of UV as an advanced oxidation process (AOPs) to reduce biofilm in the drinking water field. This dual research trajectory reflects Yiqian's commitment to advancing environmental solutions. For collaboration or inquiries, connect with Yiqian Wu via yiqianw@yorku.ca.

Reece Lima-Thompson

Reece is a MASc. candidate at York University. His research is focused on utilizing UV driven advanced oxidation processes for the removal of recalcitrant contaminants in drinking water. In particular, looking to minimize costs to allow an increase in adaptation of these technologies to full-scale, which can increase the resilience water utilities have from the effects of climate change.

Shapour Jafargholinejad

Shapour Jafargholinejad

Shapour Jafargholinejad was a graduate student at York University. Now, he is working as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at York University, focusing on advancing microfluidics and electrochemical sensor technologies. His work often intersects with developing microfluidic electrochemical sensors to enhance detection sensitivity and efficiency in various applications, including contaminant detection (such as heavy metals and PFAS) in water and critical mineral (such as lithium-ion) detection. Ammar Mahgoub

Ammar is a graduate of the civil engineering program at York University with interests in water and wastewater engineering. He is drawn to this area of research because of his passion for water treatment and desire to contribute to finding innovative solutions to assist this process. This interest was developed during his time as an undergraduate student when he was working part-time as a research assistant with Dr. Stephanie Gora on a project about drinking water safety in small communities in Canada and when he was taking courses that were related to water and wastewater treatment.

Patrick Di Falco

Patrick Di Falco

Patrick is a MASc. student at York University who is focusing on research investigating the usage of ultraviolet light for biofilm prevention and mitigation in humanitarian settings. He developed a strong interest in water resources engineering during his undergraduate studies and decided to continue pursuing studies in this field through graduate school. Patrick's interest is rooted in his belief that water is an integral part of our lives. He believes that we should strive to find more efficient ways to treat water while also making clean water more accessible to everyone.
