Last winter, York University welcomed a special cheque presentation of $75,000 from Gursikh Sabha Canada. This closed event was attended by representatives of Gursikh Sabha Canada, the York University Sikh Student Association, and York University’s Markham Campus and Advancement teams.

“On behalf of York University, I want to thank Gursikh Sabha Canada for their generous donation to our Markham Campus, and for recognizing the value and opportunities the new campus will bring to one of the most diverse and dynamic urban communities in the province and country,” says Susana Gajic-Bruyea, Vice-President Advancement. “It is community partnerships like this one that enable us to create positive change locally and globally.”

“It is an honour to receive support from Gursikh Sabha Canada and the Sikh community,” says Gordon Binsted, deputy provost, Markham. “Our partnership with the Sikh community is integral in creating a university that honours and reflects the communities we serve. This donation and continued support from Gursikh Sabha Canada have planted seeds for the future of learning and access to higher education in York Region.”

“Gursikh Sabha Canada provides services to the Sikh community of Toronto East, York, and Durham regions,” says Gobinder Randhawa, senior leader, Gursikh Sabha Canada. “Beyond our commitment to serving the Sikh community religiously, we also strive to make a positive impact in Canada, our proud nation, through initiatives such as hospital fundraising or community project support. We believe that our support for the university contributes to shaping a future where the next generation is well-educated and equipped to make a positive difference in the country. Our aim is to foster unity and respect among communities and inspire the future generations to do the same.”

Markham Campus is slated to open in Spring 2024. It will offer undergraduate and graduate programs centered around innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. Applications for Markham Campus programs will open in Fall 2023.
