Rate of Pay: $17.75 - $19.50
Hours: Fall/Winter Up to 15hrs/week Summer: Up to 35hrs/week

Job Purpose:
The Career Peer Lead will support with career programs and initiatives by increasing awareness of the Career Centre and its services; supporting students in building career self-management skills; creating opportunities for students to make connections; and encouraging dialogue around careers. This position will also provide ongoing support, guidance, and mentorship to the team of Career Peer Educators in all of their duties.
Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Career Educators, the Career Peer Lead is responsible for the following tasks:
- Identify student needs and assist students in locating accurate career and job search information
- Provide one-on-one assistance to students and recent graduates on resumé, cover letter, interview preparation, and building professional online presence through LinkedIn and other social media profiles
- Use a peer coaching approach, support students and recent grads with their career questions in a group, and tabling settings (drop-ins, special events, and other venues as needed)
- Make informed referrals to programs and services within and outside the Career Centre
- Represent the Markham career team at various campus events; be proactive at events by engaging passers-by; promote career services and act as an ambassador for the Career Centre
- Assist at Career Centre events as needed (e.g. Career Fair).
- Develop content for the career website and social media (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok).
- Engage in project work to support career services and personal/professional goals (e.g. research, reports, resource development, etc.).
- Track service usage and metrics; input data and perform administrative tasks as assigned.
- Participate in preparatory and in-service training offered by the Career Centre, the Becoming YU program, as well as ongoing team meetings and supervision.
Lead Duties:
- Provide logistical and communication support to the Career Educators, support overall program operations and development.
- Assist the Career Educators with recruitment, coordination, and training, including the development of a training program and manual.
- Chair team meetings, including setting agendas, co-chairing meetings, facilitating training sessions, taking, and distributing meeting minutes.
- Work collaboratively with team leads from peer programs across the Student Success Centre.
- Play a coaching role within the Becoming YU program for the Career Peer Educators.
- Performing administrative duties as assigned (e.g. scheduling, record keeping, statistical analysis, email correspondence).
Education & Skills:
- Must be enrolled as a York student.
- Ability to manage a peer team and chair meetings.
- Ability to build rapport, apply active listening, coaching and or advising skills.
- Experience making effective referrals; ability to exercise sound judgment in dispensing information and recognize when to go to/refer to professional staff at the Career Centre
- Ability to support students and new grads in their job search efforts and career success; proven interest in student success and supporting fellow students.
- Ability to communicate effectively while facilitating group sessions.
- Ability to actively seek out and contribute to learning opportunities for self and team members; demonstrate commitment to continuous learning.
