FAQs

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons are eligible for OSAP.

Your OSAP entitlement amount, is based on the government’s assessment of your financial need and educational costs.  Assessment factors include gross family income, student resources, expected financial resources (e.g. work integrated learning income), enrollment status, course load, academic progress, family size and more.

The OSAP Aid Estimator can provide you with a rough estimate of the funding that you may be eligible for, through OSAP.

OSAP is a financial aid program offered jointly by the provincial and federal governments.  Funding is available in the form of grants and loans.

Students who apply for OSAP may qualify for grants only, loans only, or a combination of grants and loans.  Students are not required to repay OSAP loans until 6 months after studies are complete.

OSAP federal loans are interest free. OSAP provincial loans are not interest free. Interest is charged on provincial loans immediately after you exit school.

OSAP loans are payable to the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC). Students receive advance notice from NSLSC informing them when payments are due.

When an OSAP application is approved, (grant and/or loan) funds will be automatically disseminated to the university.  Any surplus for that academic term/year will be sent to the student’s bank account.

You can register at any time, by creating a profile online at https://www.ontario.ca/page/osap-ontario-student-assistance-program

Fall/Winter OSAP applications open in May.  Due to processing times it’s best to apply asap, ideally no later than 6 to 8 weeks before classes start. To determine your eligibility for OSAP funding, you can submit an OSAP application online through your OSAP account.

It’s best to apply for OSAP within the first two weeks of July, since OSAP cost codes are by this time and students will not need to manually enter their program information on OSAP.

Student must then select York University as your school from a list of approved schools and search for your program under approved programs, including “Markham” in your search.  Apply for OSAP for Fall and Winter (Fall/Winter) at the same time, as you will be advised to enroll in your Fall and Winter courses at the same time.

Students who apply for OSAP and do not qualify for grants, may qualify for loans.  If you are not interested in a loan, you can apply for OSAP grant funding only directly on your OSAP application.

OUAC is a centralized application service for applications to Ontario universities.  No, there is no benefit to linking OSAP to OUAC.

York University scholarships, awards and bursaries will be automatically reported to OSAP by YorkU, please do not report these.  Visit this page for more information: https://sfs.yorku.ca/scholarships-awards-bursaries

The full-time deadline to apply for OSAP is 60 days before the study period ends. The part-time deadline to apply for OSAP is 40 days before the study period ends. All required documentation must be uploaded 40 days the before end of study period (term).  For important OSAP dates visit: https://osap.yorku.ca/osap-important-dates

If you have submitted your OSAP application with required documents by July 25 for Fall/Winter applications or November 21 for Winter only applications and do not receive your funding by the payment due date of January 10, interest will be deferred on the outstanding balance for the month of January (interest charges will resume in February if unpaid). Visit the OSAP Important Dates page for more information.

OSAP funds will be remitted for your YorkU fees.  If the funds you receive from OSAP exceeds your YorkU fees, the balance will go to your bank account.  Students are advised to set up their banking information by visiting YorkU “Request a Refund” page, there is a button to “Create or Update My Banking Information”.  Add your banking information there.

If the funds you receive from OSAP does not cover all your YorkU fees, you will be required to pay the difference. Fees are posted throughout the year.  Students are advised to login to their student account regularly to view their statement and check the minimum balance due, to ensure that all fees are paid.

When you register, fees will be charged to your student account.  Fees are posted throughout the year.  Students are advised to login to their student account regularly to view their statement and check the minimum balance due, to ensure that all fees are paid.  Visit our webpage about how and when to pay through your student account. Fall fees are typically due September 10, and Winter fees are typically due January 10, after which, interest will be charged on unpaid fees.  Please refer to deadlines here: https://registrar.yorku.ca/enrol/dates

Year 1 International students, who need receipts for visa purposes, can pay via international wire and will automatically receive a receipt on MyFile.

If you are a first-year student and paid the registration deposit, you will not be de-enrolled from classes should you miss the “Minimum Payment due by” date.

However, you will accumulate interest charges on your student account.

To avoid this situation, we recommend reading the Understand Your Statement webpage.

If you’ve misreported your income, you must complete and submit an income change request form for the applicable session: https://osap.yorku.ca/osap-forms.

Student Financial Services publishes Statements once per month, around the 18th.  The statement gives you what is due for the next month, where you can view the minimum amount due.  If your OSAP/payment came in after this date, it’s likely not posted yet.

The person who opened the education account would ask the financial institution for educational assistance payments.  Each financial institution may have different requirements, but they typically ask for proof of enrollment to confirm your enrollment status (e.g. full-time/part-time student), and check that the university is an eligible institution, before releasing funds.  Funds may be released directly to you, and they may request receipts.  It’s best to connect with your financial institution for the process.

You can download a standard enrollment letter, or a letter to have your RESP funds released, at no cost, from this website: https://registrar.yorku.ca/program/letters.  YorkU Fees are payable via this link https://sfs.yorku.ca/fees/your-student-account and once you register and enroll in your courses, your term fee will be posted to your student account found here: https://sfs.yorku.ca/fees/your-student-account.

If you do not remember your Passport York username or password you can reset your username or password using one of the options provided on the Passport York Password Reset web page.
