Version 1, August 2024
Preamble
The Transitional Curriculum Committee (TCC) for the York University School of Medicine undergraduate medical education program is being established to lay the groundwork for curriculum development. Once its work is complete, the TCC will evolve into a formal Undergraduate Medical Education Program Committee (UMEPC).
The future UMEPC will address CACMS Element 8.1, Curricular Management: The faculty of a medical school entrust authority and responsibility for the medical education program to a duly constituted faculty body, commonly called a curriculum committee. This committee and its subcommittees, or other structures achieving the same functionality, will oversee the curriculum as a whole and have responsibility for the overall design, management, integration, evaluation, and enhancement of a coherent and coordinated medical curriculum.
Vision of the School
York’s School of Medicine will prepare the next generation of talented frontline primary care doctors — who represent the diversity of the communities in which they live — to not only thrive in a new, interprofessional, team-based health care environment but to continue to
adapt to evolving patient, community and health system needs.
Purpose
The TCC is established to develop the School undergraduate medical education curriculum. It will be responsible for the following:
- An overall curriculum map
- Determination of the overall number of courses
- Review the Request for Proposals for Curriculum Mapping software and Learning
- Management Systems which will be linked to the learning outcomes and recommendations of the Learning Outcomes Advisory Committee and the Assessment Committee recommendations and what is needed for Accreditation and ongoing quality improvement and evaluation and provide recommendations to the Accreditation Steering Committee
- Review the proposed Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) developed by the Learner Outcomes Advisory Committee and make a recommendation to the Accreditation Steering Committee
- Obtain consultations on the overall curriculum map and PLOs from the various Advisory Boards as well as content experts e.g. in digital health, epidemiology, etc.
Important to note that the undergraduate medical education curriculum:
- Focuses on educating students interested in primary care or generalist specialist
practice after graduation - Incorporates interprofessional education.
- Trains students to work effectively in an integrated, value-based, and team-based health care system supported by distributed clinical learning, including longitudinal integrated clerkships (LICs) in both rural and urban settings.
- Emphasizes social justice (decolonization, diversity, equity, and inclusion), principles of population health
- Educates students on the use of digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) to prepare students for the future of healthcare
