Preamble
The Faculty Development Committee for the York University School of Medicine undergraduate medical education program is being established to propose a comprehensive faculty development plan which will address the needs of both clinical and non-clinical faculty members as they begin their faculty careers. This committee will report to the Dean of Record/Institutional Lead for the School. This committee will also collaborate with the Transitional Curriculum Committee (TCC) and once the TCC evolves to the Undergraduate Medical Education Program Committee (UMEPC) the assessment committee will report to the UMEPC as well as the Faculty Appointments committee.
Vision of the School
York University’s School of Medicine will prepare the next generation of talented frontline primary care doctors — who represent the diversity of the communities in which they live — to not only thrive in a new, interprofessional, team-based health care environment but to continue to adapt to evolving patient, community and health system needs.
Purpose
The Faculty Development Committee for the School is established to develop and propose a faculty development program for all clinical and non-clinical faculty. Faculty development encompasses activities that will advance their knowledge, skills and behaviors in the following areas: teaching, educational scholarship, research, leadership and administration.
The Faculty Development Committee works in accordance with the following Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) standard 4, in particular, element 4.5.1:
- Standard 4: Faculty Preparation, Productivity, Participation, and Policies
- Element 4.5.1 A medical school and/or the university provides opportunities for professional development in those areas needed to fulfill faculty members’ obligations to the medical education program and to enhance faculty member’s skills and leadership abilities
The Faculty Development Committee’s work will be informed by key actors including, but not limited to:
- York University’s Office of Faculty Affairs
- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
- Canadian Medical Protective Association
- The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
- Other relevant bodies involved in the education of physicians
Term
The Terms of Reference is effective from October 1, 2024 and will continue until October 1, 2025, after which they will be reviewed and revised, as appropriate.
Membership
Full members:
- Advisor, Faculty Development (Co-Chair)
- Medical Education Developer (Co-Chair)
- Three (3) community physicians:
- One (1) will be a Community Based Primary Care physician (i.e. Family Physician),
- One (1) Community Based RCPSC generalist specialist physician,
- One (1) Community Based physician
- Two (2) faculty members with experience in faculty development
- Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning
Ex-officio members:
- Faculty Lead, Curriculum and Accreditation
- Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Operations Director
- Advisor, Curriculum and Accreditation
- Advisor, Research
Operations
- The Faculty Development Committee will meet every two weeks or at the call of the Co-Chairs
- The meetings will be 90 minutes in duration
- Quorum will be 50% of the committee members
- The term of the representatives is one year
- Meeting minutes reflecting the activity of the committee shall be recorded
- Committee members are expected to attend meetings or, if unable to do so, send advance notice of their absence.
- When one Co-Chair is not present, the other Co-Chair will chair the committee.
- Key actors, such as advisors internal or external to York University, will be invited to attend on an as-needed basis
- The Faculty Development Committee reports to the Dean of Record/Institutional Lead
- The Faculty Development Committee collaborates with the TCC which will evolve into the UGMEPC as well as the Faculty Appointments Committee
Committee Member Expectations
- Attend at least 75% of the meetings
- Prepare for meetings in advance
- Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
- Solicit collegial input, as appropriate
Roles and Responsibilities
- To develop a comprehensive faculty development program for clinical and non-clinical faculty members which addresses activities that will advance knowledge, skills, and behaviors related to:
- Teaching
- Educational Scholarship
- Research
- Leadership
- Administration
- To identify and prioritize specific faculty development activities and resources that align with relevant existing and future strategic plans
- To recommend an approach to faculty orientation
- To provide recommendations on mentorship
- To promote professionalism among faculty members
- To promote the health and well-being of faculty at work
- To provide recommendations around policies and/or guidelines for various faculty development activities
- To ensure the principles of decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion are integrated into assessment
