Interprofessional Education Committee

Preamble  

The Interprofessional Education (IPE) Committee, established for the York University School of Medicine undergraduate medical education program and other health professional students will propose a strategic plan for interprofessional education in collaboration with the Faculty of Health (FoH) and community partners. This committee will provide its’ recommendations on IPE strategy to the following individuals/committee: Dean of Record/Instutitional Lead for the School; Faculty Lead, Curriculum and Accreditation; Advisor, Curriculum and Accreditation; Advisor, UGME Curriculum and Operations; and the FoH Council; Transitional Curriculum Committee (TCC) and once the TCC evolves to the Undergraduate Medical Education Program Committee (UMEPC).  

Vision of the School 

The School will prepare the next generation of talented frontline primary care doctors — who represent the diversity of the communities in which they live — to not only thrive in a new, interprofessional, team-based health care environment but to continue to adapt to evolving patient, community and health system needs.  

Purpose 

The IPE Committee for the School is established to develop and propose a strategic plan for IPE across all three years of the Undergraduate Medical Education Program (UGMEP). The proposed strategic plan will consider the following sources:   

  • Committee on Accreditation for Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) Standards and Elements 
  • Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing accreditation 
  • Canadian Psychological Association Accreditation Standards for Doctoral and Residency Programs in Professional Psychology 
  • Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Academic Accreditation 
  • Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada 
  • Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs  
  • Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology 
  • CASWE-ACFTS Accreditation for Programs in Social Work 
  • A National Interprofessional Competency Framework, Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative 

Term 

The Terms of Reference is effective from October 1, 2024 and will continue until October 1, 2025, after which they will be reviewed and revised, as appropriate. 

Membership 

Membership should be diverse and include members of York University, Hospital Leadership, and advisors to the School. The membership will reflect the principles of decolonization, equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as a diversity of health care professionals from university and community partners as much as possible. A member of the Bachelor of Interprofessional Health (BIPH) Working Group will also be included. 

Co-leads: 

  • Advisor, Inter-Professional Education (Co-Lead) 
  • Faculty member (tenured, tenure track) from the FoH at York University (Co-Lead) with knowledge of IPE  
  • Hospital leader who has experience with IPE (Co-Lead) 

Academic Members 

  • Medical Education Developer 
  • One (1) FoH faculty member (tenured, tenure track) engaged in IPE research  
  • One (1) Member of the BIPH Working Group  
  • Up to three (3) faculty members from the FoH or other faculties at York University representing different health professions (e.g.., nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, social worker) 
  • One (1) faculty member or staff/manager who is responsible for experiential education/practicum placements in the FoH 

Community IPE members 

  • Three (3) community physicians 
  • One (1) Community-based Primary Care physician, i.e., Family Physician;  
  • One (1) Community-based Generalist Physician;  
  • One (1) other Community-based physician 
  • Two (2) health care professionals from the community/hospitals (e.g. nursing, pharmacist, psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker, etc.) 

Ex-officio members: 

  • Faculty Lead, Curriculum and Accreditation  
  • Associate Dean, Learning, Teaching & Academic Programs, FoH  
  • Advisor, UGME Curriculum and Operations  
  • Advisor, Curriculum and Accreditation 

Operations 

  • The IPE Committee will meet every two weeks or at the call of the Co-Leads 
  • The meetings will be 90 minutes in duration  
  • Quorum will be 50% plus one of the committee members 
  • Members serve for one year, or based on a revised the Terms of Reference 
  • Meeting minutes reflecting the activity of the committee shall be recorded 
  • Committee members are expected to attend meetings or, if unable to do so, send advance notice of their absence. 
  • When one Co-Lead is not present, one of the other two Co-Leads will chair the committee. 
  • Key parties of interest, such as advisors internal or external to York University, will be invited to attend on an as-needed basis 
  • The IPE Committee reports to the Dean of Record/Institutional Lead for the School and to the Transitional Curriculum Committee. 

Committee Member Expectations 

  • Attend at least 75% of the meetings 
  • Prepare for meetings in advance 
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner 
  • Solicit collegial input, as appropriate 

Roles and Responsibilities  

  • To develop and propose a strategic plan for IPE for the School in collaboration with FoH and appropriate Faculties for IPE which will meet the accreditation standards of the various health professionals 
  • To propose various IPE placements for health care professional students 
  • To establish buy-in from faculty members of the FoH and appropriate Faculties for IPE
