In-Game Entertainment: The"Other" Main Event

By: Jason Arcuri

More recently, it has been suggested that half-time has even begun to push the limits of televisuality itself. Nearing the 45-minute mark, modern half-time shows have essentially become a premier concert venue for the day's most prominent musical acts (ranging from icons such as U2 to flash-in-the-pan phenoms such as the New Kids on the Block). Since it is met and promoted with such tremendous fanfare (and because not a second goes by un-broadcast), half-time is effectively regarded as the "show within the show".

Still, in order to realize the full magnitude of the half-time phenomena, one need not look further than the 2004 edition. Though it will always be remembered for its infamous "wardrobe malfunction", the resulting public backlash and reaction from the NFL regarding the incident proved that the show is not simply an afterthought within the structure of the game broadcast, but a feature with a distinct audience and place.
