I AM
JACK'S CHARACTER DESCRIPTION
MARLA SINGER
Is
a woman who has total disregard for her own well being or anybody
else's for that matter. She Steals other peoples clothes from
the Laundromat to sell at thrift stores (DVD TIME CUE:00:17:11),
takes food from the senior citizens meals on wheels (DVD TIME
CUE 1:06:24), walks into the middle of traffic with complete disregard
for her safety (DVD TIME CUE:00:17:36) and tries to commit suicide
(DVD TIME CUE: 47:26). One of the very few female characters in
Fight Club, she serves as the catalyst for Fight Club (as Jack
must turn to something else for therapy) (SLIDE
Fight Club Analysis) and a thorn in the side of Jack throughout
the movie as she destroys the therapeutic effects of his support
groups, invades his life with himself and Tyler and serves as
a constant annoyance through her antics (ex. her suicide attempt,
her attempt to seduce Jack etc.). As 'disturbed' as she may seem
to be, she is the only one who truly seems to care for Jack on
some level despite how badly Jack/Tyler treats her. Jack sees
in her a reflection of himself, which he dislikes and therefore
try's to keep Marla at a distance so he can continue to be more
like Tyler (Slide
Fight Club Analysis) In the end however, when Jack realizes
that he IS Tyler, he finally admits to his feelings for Marla
and she ironically seems to be the perfect match, and in some
form … one half of the answer that Jack has been searching for
all along.
