The Gothic Film: From Classic to "Blockbuster"The Gothic Villain: A New Sympathy for EvilThe gothic film today is a narrative of a particular genre with gothic elements included. The gothic film narrative has somewhat disappeared because of changes within the genre's elements, one of them being that of the gothic villain. With the onset of the new millennium, "unlike the earlier centuries we are not goaded by the retribution of the villain into social compliance. We have begun questioning the larger questions in life with the arrival of the new millennium. Instead of watching a truly dark being perform acts of terror, we are trying to cope with the discovery of our own darker sides". Violence is more common today as a method of dealing with injustice, confusing the 'good' with the 'bad'. This confusion is mirrored in more recently produced films. In Underworld (2003) the 'evil' Lucian is a lycan (werewolf) trying to defeat vampires and create his own race. Lucian is considered to be the villain in this "gothic" story, yet he becomes a character to sympathize as his past and reasons for 'wrongdoings' are revealed. As a "gothic" hero in the new millennium, Lucian is the victimized, evil hero. He is the representation ofthe modern individual, no longer the classic creature of the unknown, but a human being.
