Davies Business Law Lecture: 'Hall of Fame' lawyer and Columbia Professor of Law John C. Coffee, Jr.

"Shareholder Wealth Maximization – On Steroids: Do the Brakes Still Work in Corporate Governance?"

TORONTO, January 11, 2016 – John C. Coffee, Jr., the Adolf A. Berle Professor of Law at Columbia University Law School and director of its Center on Corporate Governance, will deliver the seventh Davies Business Law Lecture at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University on Thursday, January 14, 2016.

Presented by Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP and the Jay and Barbara Hennick Centre for Business and Law, the lecture will be held from 12:30pm to 2pm in Room 1014 of the Ignat Kaneff Building.

The most cited law professor in the combined corporate, commercial and business law field, Coffee will discuss “Shareholder Wealth Maximization – On Steroids: Do the Brakes Still Work in Corporate Governance?”

Coffee is consistently listed among the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal. He has served as a Reporter to the American Law Institute for its Corporate Governance Project, on the Legal Advisory Board to the New York Stock Exchange and on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Advisory Committee on the Capital Formation and Regulatory Processes. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author or editor of several widely used casebooks on corporations and securities regulation.

His books include John C. Coffee, Entrepreneurial Litigation: Its Rise, Fall, and Future (Harvard University Press, 2015); John C. Coffee, Gatekeepers: The Professions and Corporate Governance (Oxford University Press, 2006); John C. Coffee, Louis Lowenstein and Susan Rose-Ackerman, Knights, Raiders and Targets: The Impact of the Hostile Takeover (Oxford University Press, 1988); and Eilís Ferran, Niamh Moloney, Jennifer G. Hill and John C. Coffee, The Regulatory Aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis (Cambridge University Press, 2012).

According to a recent survey, Coffee is the most cited law professor in law reviews over the last 10 years in the combined corporate, commercial and business law field. In 2015, Lawdragon listed him on its 100-member “Hall of Fame” list of influential lawyers in the United States.
