York U experts available to comment on impact of a Trump Presidency for Canada, NAFTA, TPP

Donald Trump’s stunning victory in yesterday’s American election has Canadians talking about how to speak to their kids about the results, what to expect for our economy and how it happened. The following York University experts are available for comment:

Carl James, Professor in York University Faculty of Education, an expert in education, race, racism and the cultural lives of minority students, is available to discuss the impact of a Trump Presidency in Canadian classrooms including:

  • How can teachers encourage students to speak out about Trump's negative rhetoric on race and bias in a constructive way?
  • How can teachers criticize Trump’s behavior, not his politics?
  • How can teachers use Trump to delve into policy issues, healthy conversations?

Rodney Loeppky, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, is an expert in American politics. He is available to discuss the election in general and in particular:

  • What the election shows about the Republican Party’s ability to reach more deeply into its  white, working-class base.
  • Why the Democrats were not able to mobilize black and Hispanic voters.

Gus Van Harten, Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, is an expert in international trade, investment law, NAFTA and trade treaties, and is available to discuss the impact President Trump will have on the Canadian economy, specifically on:

  • Trump calls out NAFTA frequently, has this swayed how things will be done in future and how will it impact Canada's role?
  • Trump’s rhetoric on international trade issues has deemed his policy position as heavily protectionist, how will this impact trade here?
  • How will these election results impact the controversial foreign investor protection system in TPP?
