The impact of homelessness on the LGBTQ2S community: York U expert available
TORONTO, June 20, 2018 −Studies on youth homelessness in Canada have shown that approximately 30% of youth experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ2S. With a history of stigma and bias faced by members of this community as a whole, it is also known that LGBTQ2S youth are at a higher risk of homelessness due to homophobia and transphobia in the home and they often face the same discrimination in the shelter system.
Stephen Gaetz, Professor in the Faculty of Education and Director of the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, can comment on homelessness and housing issues, including the causes of homelessness in the LGBTQ2S community and the approach to address both emergency housing needs and prevention.
