York U excels in QS World University Rankings with more than 15 programs in top 10 across Canada

TORONTO, March 14, 2025 – In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, York University continues to excel in the rankings across the country with more than 15 programs in the top 10.

In addition, York is ranked sixth in Canada and second in Ontario for its arts and humanities programs, and in the top 100 worldwide for English language and literature, as well as going up three spots from seventh to fourth in the country for geography. For social sciences and management, York continues to rank eighth in Canada, while also achieving fourth in Ontario.

“The QS world university subject rankings demonstrate York University’s leading position among global universities with our exceptional academic programs, enriched by experiential and work integrated learning opportunities,” says York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. “At the same time, we continue to reach higher by exploring new and innovative ways to teach and conduct research and expanding the influence of the work of our scholars and researchers.”

The QS World University Rankings by Subject, published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), evaluates a total of 55 subjects. The number of universities included in this year’s ranking increased by an additional 171 to more than 1,700 across 100 countries.

The rankings categorize the subjects into five main areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.

York’s top 10 in Canada, top five in Ontario, subject rankings include:

  • Social policy and administration
  • Business and management studies
  • History
  • Performing arts
  • Philosophy
  • Geography
  • Accounting and finance
  • Anthropology
  • Linguistics
  • Communications and media studies
  • Economics and econometrics
  • Education
  • Sociology
  • English language and literature

York also ranked in the top 10 in Ontario for mathematics, physics and astronomy, medicine, chemistry, mechanical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering.

The University rose five spots to land in the top 35 institutions in the world for advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), according to the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assesses universities in the UN SDGs in research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. York is also one of the top five best comprehensive universities in all of Canada as listed in Maclean’s 2025 University Rankings.
