Want a job? Learn how to succeed at school first

cover of book, How to Succeed in Univeristy with briefcaseTORONTO, Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 – As university students head toward exams, York University Professor Thomas Klassen wonders if they’ve mastered the art of studying.

Klassen and York U Professor John A. Dwyer are co-authors of the book, How to Succeed at University (and Get a Great Job!): Mastering the Critical Skills You Need for School, Work, and Life, which will be released in French in January 2018 as Décrocher son diplome universitaire. They penned the book, available free as a PDF or for a cost as a hardcover, to help students as they cram for exams and try to keep up with readings.

With the newest crop of students hitting the books, Klassen has some suggestions on everything from conducting the best oral presentations and the importance of group work, to taking good notes and being organized. He shows how mastering these skills are the key to not only flourishing at school, but also obtaining a good job after graduation.

Klassen is available to discuss the above, as well as the following:

  • How to reduce anxiety
  • How to prepare for an exam
  • Strategies for multiple choice exams versus written ones
  • Crafting and making the most of essays
  • How to develop better critical skills
  • Learning how to problem solve for school and work
  • Applying for graduate and professional programs and jobs

As Klassen writes, “University is about preparing for the rest of your life, not just your job.”
